Gabriela Sosa launched a walkoff three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to cap off a four-run inning for Wausau, handing the Minot Honeybees a heartbreaking 8-6 defeat on Thursday, June 18.
Sosa sent a 3-1 pitch from Minot’s Parker Rowden over the fence in center for her first home run of the season to complete the comeback for the Ignite.
Minot entered the seventh inning with a 6-4 lead, but was unable to record an out in Wausau’s final at-bat. Claire Calmes and Brynn Daniel led off with back-to-back singles and Riley Schwisow drove in Calmes with a double to left. Sosa ended the game from there.
The Honeybees (3-5) had come back from a 3-0 deficit with a four-run fourth. Ellen Tarjan got Minot on the board with a two-run double, scoring Sara Simon and Alyssa DeMaio. Reagan Winn brought in another with an RBI double to left. Winn would come around to score on a single by Clare Rettler.
The Ignite (2-5) tied the game in the bottom half of the frame on an RBI double by Taylor Liebelt before the Honeybees reclaimed the lead with two more runs in the sixth. Two-out singles from Bridget Chapman and Simon both led to runs for the Honeybees.
Minot registered 16 hits, led by Rettler’s 3-for-5 performance. Alex Serbio, Simon, Tarjan and Sophia Brennan all finished with two hits. Tarjan also had two RBIs. Ten Honeybees recorded a hit.
Wausau totaled 14 hits, with six going for doubles. Liebelt recorded three hits – all doubles – driving in two runs and scoring once. The Ignite also had 10 batters record a hit.
