The Minot High girls tennis team’s No. 1 singles player and No. 1 doubles pairing both ran into defending state champions in the title matches, but still finished second at the state individual tournament on Saturday, May 30, in Grand Forks.

Kyllie Fettig – the WDA singles champion – won her first three matches in straight sets before falling to West Fargo Sheyenne’s Sarea Gu in the championship match. Gu – the defending state and EDC champion – became the first repeat singles champion since Mimi Gu in 2021 and 2022. Sarea Gu defeated Fettig 6-1, 6-2. She won all four meetings with Fettig this season.

Fettig opened her tournament run with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Grand Forks Red River’s Irene Tang. She then took down Bismarck Century’s Kyla Jorgenson, 6-2, 6-3, before advancing to the title match with a 6-3, 6-1, over Dickinson’s Shayna Klitzke.

Fettig finished her senior season with a 40-4 record in singles. She is the second-winningest player in program history with 166 career victories.

Williston’s Avy Ator finished third, defeating Klitzke, 6-1, 6-1, and Bismarck Century’s Jenny Pitcher took fifth with a 6-4, 6-2 win against Valley City’s Georgia Zaun.

In doubles play, Minot High’s No. 1 doubles team of Grace Olson and Ava Thuner advanced to the title match before falling 6-0, 6-3, to defending state doubles champions Kailee Nielson and Skye Nielson of Valley City. The Nielson pairing became the first repeat champions since Minot High’s Eden Olson and Sofia Egge in 2021 and 2022.

Olson and Thuner, who won the WDA doubles title, defeated Fargo Shanley/Oak Grove’s Kate Froslie and Elle Johnson in the opening round, 6-0, 6-1. They moved on to the semifinals with a 6-1, 6-4 win against Alli Wilhelm and Stella Blue of Grand Forks Central. The duo fended off Jamestown’s Anna Hronova and Elise Roberts, 6-2, 7-6 (7) to advance to the title match.

Olson finished her senior year with 42 more wins to finish off a career that included a program-record 172 victories.

Hronova and Roberts grabbed third place with a 6-4, 6-1 victory against Century’s Ava Dunlop and Sophia Edland.
