Girls Soccer: Fargo Shanley shuts out Mandan for state title

In the battle of two unbeaten teams, Fargo Shanley pitched its eighth shutout of the season and second at the state tournament in a 3-0 victory over Mandan in the state championship match on Saturday, May 30, at Sanford Sports Complex in Bismarck.
The Deacons (13-0-4) claimed their third state title in program history in their 20th appearance in the tournament. Shanley won its first state title in 2012, winning in a shootout over Bismarck St. Mary’s and in 2019 as the current co-op with Oak Grove.
Carly Hulstein put Shanley on the board in the 16th minute off a feed from Emma Rohrich. The Deacons held a 1-0 lead at halftime, and broke the game open with a pair of goals in the second half.
Rohrich gave the Deacons some breathing room with a goal in the 63rd minute. She finished the tournament with three goals after scoring twice in the semifinals against West Fargo Sheyenne. Annie Yablonski punctuated the championship with the team’s third goal in the 79th minute.
The Deacons held a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal.
Kailey Ottmar made five saves for Shanley, while Gabby Frohlich made six saves for the Braves (17-1-1). Mandan was looking to defend its first state title.
Mandan’s Sarah Helderop was named Senior Athlete of the Year and Mandan’s Aaron McElwee was named Coach of the Year.
Grand Forks finished third after its 3-2 shootout victory over West Fargo Sheyenne. The Red Raiders won the shootout, 4-3.
Red River (13-3-2) opened up a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals in the first 14 minutes. Taylor Hodney scored in the opening minute and Reagan Hodney struck in the 14th minute.
The Mustangs (14-4-2) cut the deficit in half before the half. Tenley McMenamy fired a shot past Red River goalkeeper Finn Anderson.
Olivia Anderson brought Sheyenne level with a late game in the 76th minute to force extra time.
Anderson finished with seven saves. Sheyenne’s Reese Shotley made nine saves.
Minot High finished the season with two straight wins at the state tournament to finish fifth. Camdyn Varty scored in the third minute in the Majettes’ 1-0 victory over Fargo Davies in the fifth place match.
Varty’s goal was one of just three shots on goal for Minot High (13-3-1). The Majettes’ defense limited the Eagles (6-6-6) to just one shot on goal.
Kynsli Gillmore stopped the lone shot she faced for Minot High. Leyton Johnson finished with two saves for Davies.
