The Minot Vistas had their offense going early against the Regina White Sox to open up the Border Battle tournament in Mandan, but found themselves snakebitten against the Saskatoon Diamondbacks to finish out the day.
The Vistas put up 10 runs on nine hits in a 10-4 victory over Regina before suffering their first shutout loss of the season against Saskatoon, 2-0, on Friday, June 5, on the opening day of pool play.
This year’s Border Battle field includes a trio of teams north of the border with the Regina White Sox, Saskatoon Diamondbacks and Saskatoon Diamondbacks, as well as three North Dakota representatives with the VIstas, Mandan Chiefs and Bismarck Governors. All six teams will play three pool play contests over the first two days before participating in a placement game on Sunday, June 7, based on tournament records.
Remington Anderson, Brody Mueller and Tegan Schindler all recorded a pair of hits against the White Sox, as the Vistas never trailed in the contest. They grabbed the lead with three runs in the second and took a 7-3 advantage following a four-run fourth. They added three more in the seventh.
Schindler got the offense rolling in the second, doubling home Drew Jordan. Mason Stewart drew a walk with the bases loaded to force in another run and Mueller scored Jace Price with a single to short.
Regina came back with two runs in the bottom half with back-to-back bases-loaded walks.
Three consecutive hits in the fourth highlighted a four-run inning for the Vistas, capped off by an RBI triple by Mueller. Anderson and Stewart opened the scoring with consecutive RBI singles.
Peyton House plated two runs in the seventh on a single to center and Anderson followed with a hit to right field to score House.
The nightcap against the Diamondbacks produced just five total hits. The Vistas (2-2) outhit the Diamondbacks, but stranded six runners in the game. Saskatoon left five runners on base.
Minot’s top three batters in the lineup accounted for all of the team’s hits. Schindler singled in the third, Mueller doubled in the fourth and Stewart singled in the sixth. The Vistas put their leadoff man on base in four of the seven innings.
Minot’s best opportunity to score came in the fourth after Mueller led off with the Vistas’ only extra-base hit. He advanced to third following a ground out by Jordan. But Mueller was left stranded on third following back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.
The Diamondbacks took a 1-0 lead in the third on an unearned run. Scott Broker reached base on an error at first and moved to second on the play. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground out by Karson Dziadyk.
Another ground out in the fourth provided Saskatoon’s other run. Dylan Pura walked to lead off the inning and stole second before getting to third on a ground out by Emerson Park. He came around to score when Gavin Sasko grounded out to third.
Mitchell Rauckman struck out 11 Minot batters for the Rattlesnacks across seven innings.
Mueller and Gannon Hedberg split time on the mound, combining for a two-hitter. The duo struck out seven batters.
The Vistas complete pool play against the Saskatoon Cubs on Saturday, June 6, at 2:30 p.m.
