Despite their tough match up against the West Fargo Horace Hawks in their state quarterfinals game, the Sentinels entered their match on Friday, May 29, against the Minot High Magicians with a renewed energy.
With both teams having lost their chance at a state championship, the Sentinels and the Magi were playing for a chance to appear in the 2026 NDHSAA Class A Baseball State Tournament’s fifth place game.
The Magi got the ball rolling in the bottom of the first inning, putting the first run on the board with an RBI single line drive to center field by sophomore Oliver Deschamp.
The Sentinels were quick to respond in the top of the second when senior Logan Dixon scored home on a wild pitch, tying the game at 1-1.
The Magi took their lead back in the bottom of the second inning, but the Sentinels kept the pressure high.
The Sentinels scored at least one run through the next four inning, including four runs in the top of the sixth inning, bringing their lead to 9-2. The Magi did not score again until the bottom of the sixth inning, but the score gap between the teams was too much for the Magi to handle. The Sentinels’ defense kept the Magi off the bases and the game ended with a scoreless seventh inning, giving the Sentinels the win with a final score of 9-4.
The Sentinels ended the afternoon with seven hits and six combined strike out between their two pitchers for the game, junior Mason Stewart and senior Gannon Hedberg. Hedberg earned the game win on his record.
The Magi earned eight hits over the course of their seven innings at bat and netted a combined nine strike outs between junior Remington Anderson and sophomore Brody Johnson.
Though the Magi are out of the State Tournament, the Sentinels have advanced to the Tournament Fifth Place game, where they will take on the Bismarck Demons. The game will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 30.
