Prep Softball: Sentinels split with Lakers to close regular season

The Minot North softball team snapped a six-game losing streak and heads into the postseason following an 11-8 victory over Des Lacs-Burlington/Lewis & Clark in the nightcap of a doubleheader on Friday, May 15, at Scheels South Hill Complex. The Lakers won the opener, 9-7.

The Sentinels salvaged a split with a seven-run fourth inning. Minot North entered the frame trailing 5-2 before back-to-back-to-back RBI doubles from Macy Welstad, Kinzy Welstad and Teicyn Hertz tied the game. Kate Coleman gave Minot North a 7-5 lead with a two-run single to left field. Mya Bagwell capped off the inning with a two-run home run to center.

The Sentinels (12-14) added two more runs in the fifth with an RBI double by Hertz and an RBI single by Coleman.

The Lakers (13-4) attempted a late two-out rally in the seventh. Kynlee Holter delivered a pinch-hit RBI double and Tajah Wiedmeier followed with a run-scoring single. Wiedmeier scored later in the inning, but the game ended on the following at-bat with a fielder’s choice.

Coleman finished 4-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Hertz recorded three hits – all doubles – driving in two runs and scoring three times. Kinzy Welstad, Bagwell and Macy Welstad all finished with two hits. The Sentinels recorded 16 hits.

Piper Feller doubled twice for the Lakers, driving in two. DL-B/L&C had six doubles amongst its 11 total hits.

The Lakers held off a seventh-inning rally by the Sentinels to win the opener. The Lakers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning, scoring their first run on one of five Minot North errors in the game. Wiedmeier delivered an RBI single later in the game.

Minot North scored a run in the second, third and fourth to briefly grab a 3-2 lead, but the Lakers came back with four in the top of the fifth to grab the lead for good. Logen Ystaas tied the game with an RBI single to center to score Aleia Fluhrer and Ella Smith put the Lakers in front with an RBI double. Harper Feller singled with two outs to plate Ella Smith. Harper Feller would score on an error.

The Sentinels entered their final at-bat trailing 9-3, but cut the deficit in half following an RBI single from Coleman and a two-run home run off the bat of Aven Kelly. Cole Kotaska doubled in a run with two outs, but Piper Feller struck out Alta Diedrichsen to end the game.

Piper Feller went 4-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored.

Hertz and Coleman each went 3-for-4.

Minot North plays Watford City in a WDA Tournament play-in game on Tuesday, May 19, at 1 p.m. at Scheels South Hill Complex. The Lakers are the No. 1 seed in the Class B Region 3 Tournament and play No. 8 seed Tioga in the quarterfinal round on Monday, May 18, at Scheels South Hill Complex.
