Prep Baseball: Dixon homers for Sentinels in sweep of Saints

The Minot North baseball team moved its winning streak to a season-high six games with a doubleheader sweep of Bismarck St. Mary’s on Thursday, May 7. The Sentinels won the opener 10-5 and completed the sweep with a 2-1 victory in the finale.

The Sentinels (14-6 overall, 12-6 WDA) scored nine of the first 10 runs in the opener, breaking the game open with a six-run third inning. Logan Dixon launched a two-run home run in the second inning to put the Sentinels on the board.

Minot North’s six runs in the third required just one hit. The Sentinels took advantage of seven walks and one hit batter. Dixon got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded after three walks. Garrett Nikitenko drew a walk to plate another run and Jace Price connected on a two-run single to left. The Saints issued two more walks with the bases loaded in the inning.

Tate Haugenoe doubled in the fifth to score Price and give Minot North a 10-1 lead.

Dixon finished 2-for-2 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Price went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

The nightcap was a pitcher’s duel, with both pitching staffs surrendering just four hits each. All three runs came in the third. Minot North took the lead on a bunt single down the first base line, scoring Landyn McGhee. Brody Mueller brought in Kayden Danielson with a sacrifice fly to left.

The Saints (4-17, 3-11) scored their lone run without a hit, with Dylan Iverson reaching via error to lead off the inning and scoring on a steal of home later in the frame.

Mason Stewart picked up the win on the mound for the Sentinels. He went five innings, allowing one run on three hits, striking out two and walking one. Gannon Hedberg earned a six-out save, allowing a single hit.

Maddux Gerving suffered the loss despite a complete-game four hitter. He struck out nine and walked one.

Minot North hosts a non-conference game against West Fargo Horace on Saturday, May 9, at Corbett Field at 3 p.m.
