Girls Soccer: Patriots deny Sentinels of state tournament berth with shutout victory
The Minot North girls soccer team had an opportunity to punch its ticket to its first state tournament in program history, but Bismarck Century had other ideas.
The Patriots kept their postseason hopes alive with a 2-0 victory over the Sentinels on Tuesday, May 12, at Sentinel Stadium. Century pitched its fourth shutout in its last five matches, while the Sentinels failed to score a goal for just the second time this season.
Kinley Herman gave the Patriots a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute for her first goal of the season, as Century took a one-goal lead into the locker room.
The Patriots (5-6-1 overall, 5-6-1 WDA) stretched their lead to 2-0 following an unassisted goal from Brooklyn Jahnke in the 52nd minute. It was Jahnke’s fourth goal of the year.
Century held a 10-7 edge in shots on goal. Jocelyn Haider finished with seven saves for her fourth shutout of the season. Camryn Guy made eight saves for Minot North.
The Sentinels (8-4-1, 8-4-1) currently sit in third place in the WDA standings with 25 points and three games remaining. Jamestown is three points back with a game in hand, but Minot North holds the tiebreaker. The Sentinels are nine points clear of Century for a spot in the state tournament. The Patriots can gain as many as 12 points this rest of the season and hold the tiebreaker with Minot North.
Minot North hosts Mandan on Thursday, May 14, at 7:30 p.m.
