DL-B/L&C girls, Stanley boys win Northwest Regional Meet
The Northwest Regional Meet provided Class B track & field athletes the opportunity to qualify for the upcoming state meet, and many took full advantage, recording season and/or personal best marks to compete for one final weekend.
The Des Lacs-Burlington/Lewis & Clark girls won the meet with 125 points, finishing just ahead of Nedrose, who placed second with 114.5 points. Divide County (72), Kenmare-Bowbells (67.5) and Bishop Ryan (58) rounded out the top five.
The Laker boys finished runner-up with 86 points, as Stanley took home the title with 113 points. Power Lake-Burke Central took third with 83 points, while Williams County was fourth with 70 points and Kenmare-Bowbells and New Town tied for fifth with 54 points.
Eighteen boys teams and 16 girls teams took part in the meet, which was moved from Friday, May 15, at Duane Carlson Stadium to Saturday, May 16, at Stanley High School due to weather.
The Laker girls qualified four athletes for the state meet, led by Brynn Hanson, who won the 800-meter, 1600-meter and the 3200-meter events. She also qualified in the long jump. Jacey Hutton qualified with a victory in the pole vault and a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash and Ella Brown took the 300 hurdle title in 49.33 seconds, the long jump title with a jump of 16 feet, 11.25 inches and the triple jump with a leap of 34 feet, 6.5 inches. Hope Walen had a pair of second-place finishes in the pole vault and long jump.
Kenmare-Bowbells qualified five individuals and its 4×800 relay team. Taley Michel claimed the 400-meter title with a time of 1:01.49 and also qualified in the 800-meter. She’s not the only Michel heading to Bismarck, as Tenley Michel will be joining her as she will compete in the 800-meter and the 1600-meter. Anna Petersen took fourth in the 1600-meter to punch her ticket. Amaya Baptiste (shot put) and Maggi Gill (discus) also qualified.
Nedrose’s Maycee Boyce won both the shot put and the discus and took second in the javelin. Matdy Berg won the 100-meter hurdles and was second in the 300-meter hurdles. Teammate Kyhlie Schlotz finished right behind Berg in the 300-meter hurdles. Marlee Skalicky and Briah King each placed second in the high jump and triple jump, respectively. Hannah Beuchler was third in the long jump.
Bishop Ryan sent two individuals to state with Sage Feininger placing second in the 3200-meter race and Taylor Brintnell claiming third in the javelin. The Lions’ 4×100 relay team of Lily Barnes, Hannah Schaefer, Elsie Braun and Fadeore Oni finished runners-up to Max-South Prairie, which also won the 4×200 and 4×400 relay races. Bre Rose qualified for state in the 100-meter dash for Max-South Prairie.
On the boys side, Stanley led with six individual qualifiers and also sent its 4×100, 4×200 and 4×400 relay teams to state. Austin Kanenwisher won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16 seconds flat. Ben Hynek and Hugh Jackson claimed the title in the shot put and pole vault, respectively. Zeke Wienbar (200-meter), Oscar Garcia (300-meter hurdles) and Landon Goettle (pole vault) also had runner-up finishes.
David Eberle of Max-South Prairie and Bishop Ryan’s Zach Spain qualified in multiple events. Eberle won the 100-meter dash in 11.29 and also qualified in the 200-meter dash with a fourth-place finish. Spain took third in both the 100 and 200-meter dash.
DL-B/L&C sent all four of its relay teams to state, winning both the 4×100 and 4×800 relays. Individually, the Lakers had Zayden Grover (800 meter), Taylor Selfridge (javelin) and John Smith (shot put) all place in the top three of their respective events, with Selfridge besting his event.
Nedrose had three individual qualifiers, all coming out of the field events. Derek Heinert and Ramzey Plesuk went 2-3 in the triple jump and Reino Swartwout was third in the pole vault.
Jacob Zorn qualified in both the discus and the high jump for Kenmare-Bowbells. Zorn won the discus event with a toss of 146 feet, 11 inches. Lincoln Spear finished runner-up in the javelin.
Surrey qualified one individual with Gavin Vollmer in the long jump.
The three-day state meet begins on Thursday, May 21, at the MDU Resources Community Bowl in Bismarck.
