Boys Golf: Mandan captures WDA Tournament title; Magicians, Sentinels qualify for state

The Minot High boys golf team was unable to seize the WDA Tournament title after walking away with the regular season crown, but did ensure it will be one of six West Region teams participating at the state tournament next week.

The Magicians finished with a team score of 300 to finish in second place behind tournament host Mandan, which carded a 297 to win the WDA Tournament title at Prairie West Golf Course in Mandan on Tuesday, May 26. It was the Braves first tournament title since 2001.

Williston finished a stroke back of Minot High to take third place. Bismarck Century (306), Minot North (313) and Bismarck Legacy (318) all qualified for the state tournament by finishing in the top six. Twelve teams participated in the competition.

Minot High’s Parker Argent shot a 2-under 70 to win medalist honors. Argent was the lone golfer to card a round under par. Argent had just one bogey, while birdieing three and playing the other 14 holes even par.

Minot North’s Walter Langhans and Williston’s Kane Shannon both shot even-par 72 to tie for second. Langhans finished with three birdies and three bogeys on his round, while Shannon had five birdies, three bogeys and a double-bogey.

Golfers that finished with a round of 79 or better qualified individually for the state tournament if they hadn’t already. Minot High’s Tripp Toepfer (76), Nathan Peterson (77), Connor Ressler (77) and Parker Wallner (78), as well as Minot North’s Teegan Dangel (78) all reached that threshold. Argent, Toepfer, Peterson, Ressler and Wallner had already qualified, but Dangel made it into the field on his final chance of the season.

Minot High’s Easton Bradley and Minot North’s Kyler Weishaar have also already qualified for the state tournament.

Argent, Bradley, Toepfer, Ressler and Weishaar were all named All-WDA. Weishaar was named WDA Senior Athlete of the Year and Minot High’s Mike DeLorme was named WDA Coach of the Year.

The two-day state tournament tees off on Tuesday, June 2, at Oxbow Country Club located just south of Fargo.

Starting at $2.99/week.
