Aggies come out on top in second day of region tournament
The second day of tournament play concluded for the Class B teams of Region 6 baseball on Tuesday, May 19, at Corbett Field with the first-seeded Velva/Drake/Anamoose Aggies Aggies securing their spot in the Region Championship.
The tournament kicked off late last week, with the Central McLean Cougars, the Surrey Mustangs, the Garrison Troopers and the South Prairie/Max Royals looking to win their play in matches for the Region Tournament.
The Cougars and the Troopers took victory in the first round and earned their spots against the No.1 and No.2 seeded Velva/Drake/Anamoose Aggies and Bishop Ryan/Nedrose Lions.
The quarterfinal games saw the Aggies take on the Cougars for Tuesday’s first game. The Aggies took a decisive 13-4 victory, taking an early lead in the bottom of the first inning 3-2. The Aggies kept their lead well through to the top of the seventh inning.
The Lions faced off against the Garrison Troopers in the second game of the afternoon. The game once again fell along seeded lines with the Lions claiming victory with a final score of 10-6.
The teams quickly moved on to the losers’ quarterfinals with the Troopers facing off against the Cougars. Garrison took an early lead, earning three unanswered runs in the first and second inning with Central McLean getting their first runs on the board in the top of the third inning. The Troopers ran another three across home plate in the bottom of the fifth, while allowing the Cougars just one additional run.
The Troopers ended the game knocking the Cougars out of region contention after seeing just four batters in the top of the seventh inning.
While the Troopers began to prepare themselves for their redemption match, the Lions and the Aggies took to the field for the last game of the day.
The previously high scoring Bishop Ryan/Nedrose and Velva/Drake/Anamoose teams found themselves in a pitching dual for their last game of the night.
The Lions had senior Jack Passa on the mound while the Aggies had senior Kason Larsen.
The first two innings of the game were scoreless for both teams, though it wasn’t for lack of trying. Ground outs, fly outs and line outs plagued both teams in the batter’s box through the first and second, but it was the Aggies who put the first run of the game on the board when senior Cooper Kittleson ran home on a wild pitch before Mason Kraft tripled on a line drive to left field.
The Lions secured their third out of the inning before the Aggies could bring another runner home, but after a scoreless fourth inning for both teams, the Lions secured their first run of the game.
Senior Jack Passa tied up the game for the Lions when he hit an inside the park home run on a line drive to left field.
Though the Lions had tied up the score, it was not enough to keep the Aggies from securing the win. After another scoreless inning through the sixth, senior Cooper Kittleson cloncluded the game in the bottom of the seventh with a walk off RBI double to center field, bringing sophomore Braycen Hammer home and advancing the Aggies to the Region 6 Championship game.
Though the Lions fell in the semifinals, they will have one more shot at the Region Championship.
The Lions and the Troopers will play on Thursday, May 21. The winner of that game will take on the Aggies in the Championship game. Should that team defeat the Aggies on Thursday, they will play them again on Friday, May 22, in the seventh game of the tournament.
