Prep Softball: Minot North stages late comeback with 11-run 6th inning

The Minot North softball team erased a four-run deficit with an 11-run sixth inning to come away with a 17-10 victory over Watford City on Tuesday, April 21, at Koeser Field. The game counted as two in the standings.

The Sentinels (6-4 overall, 4-4 WDA) brought 15 batters to the plate in the sixth. Six batters recorded hits, four others drew walks and the Wolves committed two errors in the frame. Kate Coleman started the scoring spree with an RBI double to score Kinzy Welstad. Coleman also doubled in her second plate appearance in the inning, clearing the bases to give the Sentinels a 14-9 lead. Aven Kelly capped off the inning with a two-run home run to left. Kelly had two home runs in the contest.

Coleman, Kelly and Eliese McCann all collected three hits. Coleman drove in a team-high five runs. Kelly plated four and Kambry Burckhard had three RBIs. Nine of the 10 batters for Minot North scored a run.

The Sentinels struck for three runs in the top of the first, but the Wolves (0-8, 0-8) immediately erased that lead in their first at-bat. Salil Shoemaker drove in two with a single and Addison Moon drew a bases-load walk.

Watford City added three more in the second, two in the third and one in the fourth to build an 11-5 lead before Minot North’s big inning. Aleyah Carpenter finished 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Shoemaker, Avery Pelton and Moon all had multiple hits.

Tiecyn Hertz picked up the win in the circle, pitching five innings of relief. Hertz allowed two runs on six hits, striking out five and walking one. Minot North hosts a doubleheader with Mandan on Wednesday, April 22, at Scheels Complex beginning at 4:30 p.m.
