Prep Softball: Minot North drops doubleheader to Mandan

Mandan scored the bulk of its runs over the final few innings in a pair of victories over the Minot North softball team on Wednesday, April 22, at Scheels Complex.

The Braves plated 13 runs in the last three frames for a 15-7 victory in Game 1 and completed the sweep with five runs in the seventh of an 11-6 win in game 2.

The Sentinels (6-6 overall, 4-6 WDA) led 6-2 after three innings in the opener, scoring a run in the first, two in the second and three in the third. Minot North scored half of those runs via walks with the bases loaded.

Mandan’s offense came to life in the fifth with five straight singles with one out. Kaebry Weekes brought in two with the bases loaded and Taylor Arnegard added another with a single to center. The Braves scored five more runs in the sixth, capped off by a two-run double from Aubrey Karsky to give Mandan a 12-6 lead.

Mandan (10-4, 8-4) strung together five more singles and three runs in the seventh.

Weekes went 4-for-6 with six RBIs and two runs scored. Karsky drove in four runs.

Kinzy Welstad finished 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs and a run scored. Mya Bagwell, Eliese McCann and Cole Kotaska also recorded multiple hits.

The Braves broke open a close game in the nightcap. Leading 6-4 entering the seventh, the Braves plated five runs to create a sizable cushion. Karsky led off the inning with a triple and scored on a single off the bat of Haylee McGrane. Harper Belohlavek and Weekes also delivered RBIs and the Braves scored a pair of runs on a Minot North error.

Welstad tripled and Kotaska doubled for the Sentinels. Kate Coleman, Bagwell and Kotaska all collected two hits. Kotaska also drove in a pair of runs.

Minot North hosts Turtle Mountain on Tuesday, April 28, at Scheels Complex at 4:30 p.m. The Sentinels were scheduled to take part in a weekend tournament in Dickinson on Friday, April 24, and Saturday, April 25, but it was cancelled due to the weather.
