Prep Softball: Big innings carry Dickinson to sweep of Majettes

No team thus far this season has been able to slow down the Dickinson softball team’s offense.

Add Minot High to that list, as the Mavericks put up 33 combined runs on 31 hits in a sweep of the Majettes on Saturday, April 11, at Dickinson Sanford Sports Complex. Dickinson scored 13 runs in the first inning in Game 1, winning 21-7 and put up eight runs in the second inning of Game 2, completing the sweep with an 11-1 victory. Both games went five innings.

Dickinson (7-0 overall, 6-0 WDA) has plated 94 runs in six games this season, scoring at least 11 runs in every contest. Heather Tibor hit two home runs and drove in five runs in the opener. Kyndall Peterson also had a home run as well as a double as part of a 4-for-4 game with five RBIs and three runs scored. Hali Henke also went 4-for-4, driving in four runs. Eight Mavericks recorded at least one hit – six with multiple hits.

The Majettes (4-4, 0-4) grabbed an early 2-0 in the top of the first off an RBI triple from McKenna Nygaard and an RBI single off the bat of Grace Burdick. But the Mavericks plated the next 16 runs, including 13 in the bottom of the first. Dickinson brought 16 batters to the plate and recorded 10 hits. Tibor capped off the inning with a two-run home run to center.

Minot High’s top four in the lineup provided the bulk of the Majettes’ offensive output, combining to go 8-for-11 with five RBIs and six runs scored. Nygaard led Minot High with three hits, tripling and doubling, driving in two runs and scoring three herself. Darby Mowbray tripled and finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

The Majettes again took the lead in their first at-bat of the nightcap. Burdick delivered a two-out, RBI triple to right field to score Nygaard. Minot High had two of its three hits in the first inning.

Dickinson responded with eight runs in the second inning. Twelve Mavericks came to the plate in the frame. Peterson and Ali Stevenson both delivered two-run triples. All eight runs came with two outs.

Gabriella Sobolik hit a two-run home run in the third and singled in the fifth to bring in Macy Eckelberg to end the game via mercy rule. Sobolik finished 3-for-4 with five RBIs and two runs scored. Peterson collected a triple and double, driving in two. Stevenson was 2-for-3 with a triple, double, two RBIs and a run scored.

Peterson allowed one run on three hits over five innings, striking out nine and walking two to earn the win in the circle.

Minot High travels to play a doubleheader against Mandan on Tuesday, April 14, beginning at 4 p.m.
