Prep Baseball: Mueller leads Minot North’s sweep of Century

Whether it was on the mound or in the batter’s box, Minot North’s Brody Mueller was dialed in during both games of the Sentinels’ doubleheader sweep of Bismarck Century on Wednesday, April 15, at Corbett Field.

Mueller took the mound in the opener, tossing a complete-game two-hitter, allowing one run while striking out 10. He also helped his own cause at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a triple, double and two RBIs in a 4-1 victory. In the nightcap, Mueller went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored as Minot North completed the sweep with a 5-4 win.

The doubleheader was moved up 24 hours due to frigid temperatures forecasted for Thursday.

The Sentinels (6-2 overall, 4-2 WDA) trailed 1-0 entering the bottom of the fifth. The Patriots plated the game’s first run in the second inning when Owen Johnson grounded out to Ty Iverson at second base, scoring Maxon Odahl.

Minot North tied the game in the fifth off an RBI single by Logan Dixon, who was pinch-hitting for Gannon Hedberg. Dixon drove an 0-2 pitch into left field, scoring Mason Stewart from second. The Sentinels added three more in the sixth. Stewart singled home Kayden Danielson, and Mueller followed with a two-RBI triple to center.

Mueller retired the Patriots (5-7, 3-3) in order in the seventh to finish the complete game. Mueller retired the final 11 batters in a row.

No comeback was needed in the finale, but the Sentinels did have to hold on to a late charge by the Patriots. Minot North took a 4-0 lead with a four-run third. The first five batters reached safely, with singles by Tate Haugenoe, Mueller, Levi Balas and Landyn McGhee. Mueller drove in one and Balas plated two with their hits in the inning. Hedberg registered Minot North’s other RBI single in the frame.

Minot North took a 5-1 lead into the seventh before Century attempted a late-stage comeback. The Patriots put runners on first and second with one out when an error at second base on a grounder off the bat of Opdahl allowed Jaxon Hermann and Joey Kraljic to score. Century added another run with two outs to get within 5-4, but Gauge Hill got Emerson Astle to ground out to Iverson at second base to end the game.

Stewart picked up the win on the mound with four innings pitched. He allowed one run on five hits and struck out three.

Minot North hosts Bismarck Legacy for a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 12, at Corbett Field beginning at 4:30 p.m.
