Prep Baseball: Magicians sweep Blue Jays with pair of comebacks

Twice the Minot High baseball team found itself trailing late in its doubleheader against Jamestown and twice the Magicians found a way to come back and secure victory.

The Magicians scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning in the opener to come away with a 6-5 victory and plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning in the finale to post a 4-2 win against the Blue Jays on Friday, April 10, at Corbett Field.

Minot High (4-2 overall, 3-1 WDA) spotted Jamestown a four-run lead before coming to the plate for the first time. The Blue Jays needed just one hit in the inning, as they drew three walks and were hit by a pitch. Jamestown loaded the bases with no outs and plated its first run when Brenner Weber was hit on a 1-0 count. Cody Busch drew a walk and two runs came around to score on a wild pitch.

The Blue Jays (0-2, 0-2) scratched across another run in the second before the Magicians rallied with six unanswered runs. Owen Meyer got Minot High on the board in the second inning with a two-out, RBI single to left field, scoring Owen Sundahl.

Minot High’s offense came alive in the sixth. Trailing 5-1, the Magicians loaded the bases with no outs. Brock Thompson walked to bring in a run and Oliver Deschamp scored Gavin King and Drew Jordan to cut the deficit to 5-4. The Magicians took the lead on their next at-bat, with Sundahl doubling to right field to score Thompson and Deschamp.

Sundahl and Deschamp each went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.

The Magicians turned a double play and Peyton House struck out Hudson Rode swinging in the seventh to end the game. House pitched the final five innings in relief, allowing no runs on three hits, striking out six and walking two.

It was the same story in the nightcap. Jamestown scored a run in the first and the third and went into the bottom of the fourth nursing a 2-0 advantage only to see Minot High stage a comeback once again.

Minot High got on the board with a run in the fourth, as King touched home on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Carter Bush. The Magicians used a three-run fifth to secure the doubleheader sweep. They brought eight batters to the plate in the frame and scored all three runs with two outs. After House scored on a wild pitch, Jordan singled home Tegan Schindler from third to put Minot High in front 3-2. King added some insurance with an RBI single to right to score Jordan.

The Blue Jays threatened in the seventh, loading the bases with two outs. Deschamp entered the game on the mound in relief of Cole Deaver and proceeded to get Nolan Maulding to pop out to Cade Erhart at second base to end the game.

King went 2-for-2 with a double, an RBI and a run scored to lead Minot High’s offense.

Deaver went 5 2/3 in relief, allowing one run on two hits while striking out four to earn the win.

The Magicians travel to Bismarck Legacy for a doubleheader on Thursday, April 16, beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Starting at $2.99/week.
