Pitching gems lead Beavers to doubleheader sweep of Huskies
On most days, two runs wouldn’t be enough offensive support for a pitching staff to come away victorious.
Not only was it enough in one win, but it was plenty for a doubleheader sweep as Minot State starting pitchers Ayden Sauerbrei and Wyatt Toth pitched a pair of gems on the mound to carry the Beavers to a pair of 2-0 victories over St. Cloud State on Sunday, April 19, at Joe Faber Field.
Sauerbrei opened the doubleheader with a complete-game four-hitter, tossing seven innings of scoreless baseball. He struck out six and walked two, allowing just seven batters to reach base. He retired the Huskies in order twice, doing so in the second and third innings.
St. Cloud State didn’t have a baserunner reach third throughout the contest.
Minot State’s defense was solid behind its pitcher, playing an error-free game. The Beavers turned a 5-4-3 double play to end the fifth and when the Huskies put runners on first and second with no outs to open the sixth, Minot State got out of it unscathed. Sauerbrei struck out Wyatt Tweet, got Wilmis Castro to ground into a fielder’s choice and ended the inning by getting Eric Bello to fly out to center.
Cowen Meyer provided the offense for the Beavers in the opening frame, crushing a two-run home run over the right field wall on the first pitch he saw from St. Cloud’s Kahler Key with two outs.
Minot State (16-21 overall, 11-16 NSIC) finished with eight hits. Noah Madas finished 2-for-3, as did Mike Williamson, who provided one of the Beavers’ three extra-base hits with a double. Colton Bagshaw added a triple in the third.
The Huskies (18-20, 14-11) outhit the Beavers in the finale, but left seven runners on base and committed two costly errors in the third that led to both of Minot State’s runs.
After going down in order in the first and second innings, Minot State got its first baserunner via a wild pitch on a strikeout, allowing Mason Boyken to reach base safely. Boyken stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Bagshaw brought Boyken in with an RBI single through the left side to put Minot State up 1-0.
The Beavers weren’t done, as a second Huskies error allowed Vinnie Gates to reach base safely and load the bases with one out. Madas flew out to center, allowing Jorey Anderson to tag and score from third.
The run support was more than enough for Toth, who went eight innings, allowing five hits while striking out six. Conner Meldrim pitched a perfect ninth to earn the save.
Entering Sunday’s twinbill, the Beavers had gone the whole season without a shutout. They held three opponents to one run.
Minot State and St. Cloud State meet again for a single game on Monday, April 20, at noon.
