Girls Soccer: McKibben nets lone goal in victory over Patriots
With Kynsli Gillmore in net, the Minot High girls soccer team doesn’t typically need to score more than a single goal, even though most of the time they give their goalkeeper plenty of goal support.
On Thursday, April 9, the Majettes offense could only muster one goal against Bismarck Century, but it was all they needed as Gillmore posted her third consecutive shutout to open the season in a 1-0 victory over the Patriots at the MDU Resources Community Bowl in Bismarck. Gillmore finished with four saves and has 11 on the season.
Jayva McKibben netted the game-winning goal in the 17th minute off a feed from Aleah Gibbons. The Majettes won the battle for possession off a goalie kick from Century’s Jocelyn Haider. Gibbons controlled the ball 40 yards from goal and saucered a centering pass past two Century defenders to the foot of McKibben, who buried the shot from 15 yards out.
The Majettes (3-0-0 overall, 3-0-0 WDA) held a 9-4 edge in shots. Haider finished with eight saves.
Minot High is the only team in the WDA yet to concede a goal. Every other team has allowed at least two goals.
The Majettes close out their week on the road against defending state champion Mandan on Saturday, April 11, at 2 p.m.
