Girls Soccer: Mandan wins state title rematch, snaps Majettes’ unbeaten regular season streak
It’s been nearly five years since the Minot High girls soccer team was on the wrong side of the scoreboard during a regular-season match.
That streak ended on Saturday, April 11, as Mandan won the battle of last year’s state title match with a 1-0 victory over the Majettes at Starion Sports Complex in Bismarck. Sierra Gustavsson scored the lone goal of the game in the 9th minute to snap Minot High’s 78-game regular-season unbeaten streak.
Minot High’s last loss during the regular season came in a 2-1 setback to Bismarck High on May 9, 2019, also occurring in the state capital.
The Braves (5-0-0 overall, 5-0-0 WDA) pitched their third consecutive shutout against the Majettes, winning 2-0 in the title game and playing to a 0-0 draw in their second meet of the regular season last year. Gabby Froehlich finished with five saves for the Braves. Mandan held a slight 5-4 edge in shots on goal.
Camryn Ulmer set up the game-winning goal, sending a through ball from the other side of midfield. Abby Landeis got behind the defense, but couldn’t get a shot off as Minot High goaltender Kynsli Gillmore came out of her net to attempt to play the ball. Gillmore couldn’t scoop up the loose ball, which went right to the foot of Gustavsson, who buried a shot into the empty net.
Gillmore finished with three saves.
The Majettes (3-1-0, 3-1-0) travel to play Bismarck St. Mary’s on Tuesday, April 14, at 7 p.m.
