Girls Soccer: Majettes rally behind Gibbons’ second-half goals

Aleah Gibbons scored a pair of goals in the second half to rally the Minot High girls soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Jamestown on Tuesday, April 28, at Jamestown Rotary Field.

The Majettes (7-1-1 overall, 7-1-1 WDA) found themselves trailing early in the match, conceding a goal off a corner kick in the second minute. Layla Becker took the corner and served it into the box. Amelia Newman found space in front of the net and knocked in a header just under the crossbar past Minot High goalkeeper Kynsli Gillmore to give the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead.

Jamestown took that lead into the locker room and half way through the second half before the Majettes broke through on Gibbons’ first of the night. A through ball from the opposite end of the field put the play in motion, as Kaylee Jackson won the race for possession. She slid a pass over to Gibbons, who curled a shot past Jamestown goalkeeper Belle Sjostrom for the equalizer in the 59th minute.

Gibbons gave the Majettes their first lead of the match in the 68th minute, dribbling past one Jamestown defender to create enough space to get a shot off that beat Sjostrom near post.

Gibbons now has a team-high seven goals this season.

Minot High held a 11-6 advantage in shots on goal. Gillmore finished with five saves, while Sjostrom made nine.

The Blue Jays (4-4-1, 4-3-1) had their four-match winning streak snapped.

Minot High hosts Minot North on Tuesday, May 5, at Duane Carlson Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. match.

Starting at $2.99/week.
