Facing off for the first time since 2012, the Minot State Beavers and the University of Jamestown Jimmies met on the baseball diamond for a double header in Miles City, MT on Wednesday evening, Apr. 1.

The Beavers won the first game of the double header 9-5 and dropped the second game 2-3.

Coming off of a 2-1 lost series against the Augustana University Vikings, the Beavers were looking to get back to their winning ways. The Beavers found their groove late in their first game of the night.

The first game of the double header started out slow for both teams. The Jimmies were up at bat first and had two ground-outs in a row before getting their first walk. Their fourth batter of the half lined-out before the lone runner to make their way home.

The Beavers were not any more successful in their first at-bat, going three up and three down without a player touching first base.

The second inning went much the same for both teams, neither scoring a single run. The third inning saw the first points of the night put up on the board, with the Jimmies homering over the right field fence for a two-run home run in the top of the inning.

The top ended with a fly out for the Jimmies, and the Beavers stepped up to the plate for their first points of the game.

Redshirt junior Colton Bagshaw got the Beavers rolling quick with a lone home run in the first at bat of the bottom of the third. He was quickly followed up by junior Cowen Meyer, who hit a home run of his own to tie the Beavers and Jimmies at 2-2. The Beavers scored once more in the bottom of the third to earn their first lead of the game with a single RBI into right field by senior Jake Orthner.

The Beavers were not able to keep their lead for long, as the Jimmies hit a two-run RBI in the top of the fourth.

The Jimmies kept their lead through the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings, and widened their lead to 5-3 in the top of the sixth inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Beavers hit their stride, scoring six runs before their third out. The Beavers scored their runs on three single-RBIs, a double RBI and a passed ball. The Beavers ended the inning with a 9-5 lead over the Jimmies.

The Beavers defense kept the Jimmies at bay, and Minot State walked away with the win in their first game of the day.

The second game of the day started off as slow as the first. Neither team scored trough the first two innings of the game, but the Beavers were the ones to first put points on the board in the bottom of the third inning. Bagshaw flied out to center field, allowing junior Jorey Anderson to score the game’s first run.

The Jimmies took the lead in the top of the fifth and the Beavers tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the inning.

Both teams had three scoreless innings before the Jimmies pulled ahead in the top of the ninth inning with a single scored run. The Beavers were unable to respond, losing the second game of the night 3-2.

The Beavers improved to a record of 11-16 after Wednesday night’s double header.

The Beavers will just have a single day’s rest before going back on the road to take on Wayne State College in a three game series beginning with a double header in Kearney, NE on Friday, Apr. 3.
