West Fargo sweeps way to 3-peat; Magicians place 6th

The West Fargo boys swimming and diving team won all 12 events en route to its third consecutive state title, holding off Bismarck Century at the State Meet at Hulbert Aquatic Center in West Fargo on Saturday, March 7.

Logan Engelstad, Isaac Elhard, Brody Engelstad and Isaiah Ayers all won both of their individual events and Griffin McAllister captured the 1-meter diving title for the Packers, which accumulated 341 points for their fifth state title in program history. The Patriots took second, finishing 19 points behind the Packers. It was the closest margin of victory during West Fargo’s three-year run. The Packers ran away with the state title last year, besting Century by 112 points.

Fargo South amassed 300 points to take third. Jamestown and Fargo Davies rounded out the top five with 180 and 172 points, respectively. Minot High placed sixth with a team score of 169. Minot North was 13th among the 16 teams with 71 points.

Luke Neumann had the top finish for the Magicians in a swimming event, placing sixth in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 54.53 seconds. Andrew Francis had a pair of seventh-place finishes in the 200 individual medley (2:05.35) and the 500 freestyle (5:00.55).

The Magicians had two of the top five divers in Tayson Solper and Holden Williams. Solper took third with a score of 411.70 and Holden Williams was fifth with a score of 392.70. McAllister scored a 483.80 to win the title, scoring 51.80 points ahead of Century’s Bridger Huelsman.

Along with diving, Minot High also placed two swimmers in the top eight in the 100 butterfly. Talmage Pehrson finished right behind Neumann for seventh with a time of 54.67.

Tim Sharp-Driver cracked the top eight in the 100 breaststroke, placing eighth at 1:04.55 for Minot North’s best individual performance of the meet.

Minot High’s top two relays finished sixth in both the 200 and 400 freestyle relay. Minot North’s 200 medley relay took seventh.

The Packers set five new state and pool records on the afternoon. Their 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams set new marks with times of 1:21.98 and 2:59.59, respectively, The previous best in the 200 relay was 1:25.27 and the 400 relay record time was 3:04.84.

Both of Elhard’s victories resulted in new state records, beginning in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:37.83 and concluding in the 100 butterfly with a time of 48.27. Brody Engelstad set the mark in the 50 freestyle, completing the race in 19.65 seconds.

Despite the Packers cleaning up in all 12 events, Century and Fargo South kept it close. The two teams both placed second in four events. Jamestown and Williston also had runner-up finishers.
