Prep Baseball: Minot North opens season with sweep of Williston
Minot North’s Levi Balas collected four hits and drove in four in a doubleheader sweep of Williston on Saturday, March 28, at Corbett Field.
The Sentinels scored five runs in both the third and sixth innings in a 10-1 victory in Game 1 to open the regular season and completed the sweep, 5-4, in Game 2, holding off a late rally from the Coyotes.
After a scoreless first two innings of the opener, Gannon Hedberg gave the Sentinels the lead with a two-run double to left field, plating Landyn McGhee and Mason Stewart. Ballas drove in Hedberg with a single to center. Dixon made it 4-0 with an RBI single to center and TJ Hjelmstad drew a bases-loaded walk to cap off the inning.
A pair of doubles with the bases loaded in the sixth provided the final five runs for Minot North (2-0). Brody Mueller knocked in Ty Iverson and McGhee, and Balas cleared the bases two batters later for his fourth RBI of the game.
Four pitchers combined to toss a two-hitter for the Sentinels. Mueller got the start, tossing two innings of no-hit ball, striking out six. Hjelmstad pitched the next three innings and Iverson and Hedberg each pitched an inning.
Justin Irgens got the start for the Coyotes (0-2), allowing one hit over two innings. The Sentinels touched up Xzavier Klumker for five runs in 2/3 innings and scored another five runs off Onyx Olivares.
Stewart, Mueller and Balas all collected two hits.
Irgens went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
The Sentinels opened the scoring in Game 2 by pulling off a double steal with runners on the corners in the first inning. Logan Dixon stole second while Stewart stole home to give Minot North a 1-0 lead. The Sentinels went up 2-0 after two after Balas scored on a passed ball with two outs.
Williston got on the board in the third before the Sentinels added three of their own in the fourth. Garrett Nikitenko blooped an infield single to score McGhee, and Henry Woodbeck delivered a two-out two-run single to left, plating Nikitenko and Balas.
The Coyotes nearly pulled out a two-out rally in the fifth. Dickinson plated a run with the bases loaded and Olivares singled up the middle to drive in two, but the game ended when he was thrown out trying to stretch out a double.
Kayden Danielson, Stewart, Woodbeck and Brady Vigested all pitched for the Sentinels in the nightcap.
The Sentinels play Grand Forks Red River and Minot High on Thursday, April 2, at Corbett Field. They play the Roughriders at 1 p.m. and the Magicians at 6 p.m.
