Minot United boys title hopes ends in OT loss to Mustangs in state quarterfinals
Overtime has provided a couple exhilarating moments for the West Fargo Sheyenne boys hockey team in the past week.
For Minot United, its first taste of overtime hockey this season will leave a bitter taste in their mouth for quite some time.
Sheyenne’s Wyatt Mattson scored 3:14 into overtime to send the East’s No. 4 seed on to the next round with a 3-2 victory over Minot United in the state tournament quarterfinals at Scheels Arena in Fargo on Thursday, Feb. 26. The Mustangs improved to 3-0 in the quarterfinal round, while the loss ended Minot United’s hopes of a third straight appearance in the semifinals.
An overtime goal got the Mustangs to the state tournament for just the third time in program history. Bennett Benson, the state’s leading scorer entering the tournament with 60 points, netted the game-winning goal in overtime in a state qualifier against Fargo Davies last Saturday. Five days later, Mattson played the hero, tapping the puck into the back of the net right in front off a backhand pass from Taylor Zander.
The Mustangs (14-9-2-0) entered the third period trailing 1-0 before registering the next two goals to grab their first lead of the game. Benson got the Mustangs on the board on the power play with 11:21 left in regulation with a shot through traffic, and Oliver Leshovsky put Sheyenne in front two minutes later.
Minot United (21-5-0-0) answered on a goal from Nick Christopher to tie the game with 7:59 left. Christopher received a pass through the crease right in front from Easton Bradley and backhanded a shot past Sheyenne goaltender Cruz Fitzpatrick.
Bradley also netted the game’s first goal, capitalizing on a 5-on-3 late in the second period. Bradley deflected a shot in front off the stick of Oliver Thompson for a 1-0 lead at the end of two periods.
Minot United held a slight 30-27 advantage in shots on goal. The Mustangs had all three shots in the overtime session.
Luke Richeson finished with 24 saves between the pipes for Minot United. Fitzpatrick made 28 saves.
The Mustangs will play Grand Forks Red River in the semifinals on Friday, Feb. 27, at 5:30 p.m. Minot United plays Jamestown at 11 a.m.
