Men’s Hockey: Top-ranked Beavers rout Midland to complete season sweep

The Minot State men’s hockey team produced one of its highest scoring outputs of the season while goaltender Blake Sittler made 17 saves for his first collegiate shutout in a 7-0 victory over Midland University on Sunday, Feb. 1, at Maysa Arena.

Colby Joseph and Walker Jerome scored two goals apiece as the top-ranked Beavers recorded their 20th win of the season and completed a season sweep of the Warriors in the process. Minot State finished 5-0 against Midland this season, with Sunday’s contest being the most lopsided of the meetings.

Scoreless late into the first period, the Beavers (20-1-2 overall, 10-1-2 MCH) struck for two quick goals before the intermission. Jay Buchholz scored on the power play with 3:52 left in the opening frame and Joseph netted his first in the final 1:11. Minot State held a 20-6 advantage in shots on goal in the first 20 minutes.

Jerome extended Minot State’s lead to 3-0 at 16:18 of the second period and opened a four-goal third period with a shorthanded tally 3:38 into the stanza. Joseph finished off a three-point night with his second goal just 42 seconds after Jerome’s second. Trenton Curtis and Slade Stanick also added goals before the final buzzer.

The seven goals from the Beavers’ offense was the most since putting up a season-high eight goals against Arizona State in their final game at the ACHA Showcase.

The Beavers outshot the Warriors 47-17.

Minot State hosts U-Mary on Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 7 p.m. at Maysa Arena.
