Girls Hockey: Jamestown’s OT loss sends Minot United to state tournament

No one was a bigger fan of Reese Meagher than members of the Minot United girls hockey team on Saturday, Jan. 21.

The Grand Forks freshman netted the game-winner goal at 1:59 of overtime to give the Knights a 5-4 victory over Jamestown, giving Minot United the eighth and final spot in the state tournament.

The Blue Jays appeared on their way to state after Izzy Maddock gave her team a 4-3 with 2:29 remaining in regulation. But Grand Forks responded on the power play with a goal by Dustee Balak with 1:25 left to force overtime.

The Knights came back from a trio of one-goal deficits. Meagher netted her first goal with just three seconds left in the second period to tie the game 2-2. Ella Yahna and Balak both scored power-play goals in the third to twice bring the Knights even.

Minot United entered the day with a two-point lead over Jamestown for the No. 8 seed. Minot United closed out its regular season with a loss to Mandan on Thursday to give the Blue Jays a chance for the postseason by winning their season finale against Grand Forks. Jamestown could have jumped Minot United in the standings with either a regulation win or an overtime win, as they held the tiebreaker in the case of a tie in points.

Minot United will play top-seeded Fargo North/South in the quarterfinal round of the state tournament on Thursday, Feb. 26, at 11 a.m. at Farmers Union Insurance Center Rink in Fargo.

Starting at $2.99/week.
