Top-ranked Beavers play at Jamestown, wrap up season hosting Calvin

The No. 1-ranked Minot State men’s hockey team is set to wrap up the regular season this week, playing 3 games in 4 days, starting Wednesday night at Jamestown.

The in-state rivals meet for the sixth time this season at 7 p.m., before the Beavers (22-1-1-1 overall) wrap up the season hosting the 9th-ranked Calvin Knights (Mich.) on Friday and Saturday at the Maysa Arena at 7:30 p.m. both nights.

A big week of action for Minot State, starting with the rivalry match-up against the 6th-ranked Jimmies.

It’s been a closely contested series all season between the in-state rivals as the Beavers are 3-0 in regulation games against the Jimmies, while Jamestown holds an overtime win and a shootout win – officially a tie – over the Beavers.

That shootout loss, back on December 10, is the last time Minot State left the ice without the victory.

Senior goalie Brandon Weare has led the Jimmies, playing all but 3 games, with 20 wins, a 2.13 goals against average, and a 92.5 save percentage.

Offensively, senior Brad Fortin has led the Jimmies (21-9-0 overall) with 18 goals and 15 assists, and has 3 goals against Minot State to lead all Jamestown players.

Freshman Carson Brown has had a big impact for the Jimmies this season, as well, with 16 goals and 14 assists.

Friday and Saturday, the Beavers are home for their final two games. Friday is Military Appreciation Night, and Saturday will be “Senior Night.”

Minot State meets Calvin (Mich.) for the first time since April 2021 at the ACHA National Tournament when the Beavers scored a 2-1 opening-round win over the Knights.

Seniors Steven Ickes and Krzysztof Petryla lead the way for a prolific Knights offense as Ickes has 21 goals and 32 assists, and Petryla has 17 goals and 27 assists.

Sophomore Aidan Feddema has been the go-to goalie for Calvin (18-5-2) with 13 wins in 16 games, a 2.48 GAA, and a 91.4 save percentage.

For Minot State, seniors Joey Moffatt and Jay Buchholz have led the way against the Jimmies, each with 3 goals so far in this season’s head-to-head series, while sophomore goalie William Dyke has played all six games with 3 wins.

On the season, Dyke has 16 wins in 19 games with 3 shutouts, a 1.62 GAA, and a 93.9 save percentage.

Offensively, Moffatt and Buchholz have been two of the team leaders for a balanced attack, with Moffatt netting 13 goals and adding 15 assists, and Buchholz adding 12 goals and 11 assists. Junior Colby Joseph leads the team with 18 goals and 14 assists this season.

Following this week’s action, Minot State heads to Albert Lea, Minnesota, for the Midwest Collegiate Hockey tournament, February 20-21, hosted by Waldorf (Iowa). The Beavers are the reigning MCH Tournament champions and look for their second MCH crown in their second season in the league.

Starting at $2.99/week.
