Women’s Wrestling: Jones runner up, Beavers place 6 at Eagle Women’s Open

Alyssa Jones won four matches and finished second at 131 pounds, leading the Minot State women’s wrestling team as one of six wrestlers to place in the top six at the Eagle Women’s Open at Chadron State on Saturday, Jan. 10.

Jones scored two pins, a technical fall and a decision against Jamestown’s Nora Houglum in the semifinals. Jones settled for second after falling to Larissa Kaz via pin in 5:38.

Jones’ runner-up finish was the best among the Beavers at the tournament, but they made the most noise at 180 pounds. Minot State placed three wrestlers in the top six in the weight class, led by Dahlia Silver, who took fourth. Lillian Garrett and Gracie Tolman finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Silva and Garrett each won four matches. Silva opened the tournament with a pin before falling in the second round via technical fall. She rallied by winning her next three matches – two via technical falls – to advance to the third-place match.

Garrett scored three wins via pin, including against Tolman in the fifth-place match. Garrett submitted Tolman in 2:45. She dropped her opening match before winning four of her five matches in the consolation bracket.

Tolman battled with two of her teammates during her road to a sixth-place finish. Silva and Garrett got the better of her, but she did open her tournament with a pin of Cali Gutierrez in 1:00.

Haleigh Lematta placed fourth at 145 and Kaiya Lopes secured a fifth-place finish at 103 to round out the top performers for the Beavers. Lematta won a pair of matches via decisions. She defeated Desza Munson, 7-0, and Ann Meiman, 3-1. Lopes also won two matches. She won via technical fall over Danna Alvarado and pinned Isabella Crown in 1:26 in the fifth-place match.

The Beavers participated in the Chardon State Duals the previous day. They fell to No. 17 Hastings College, 39-9, and Texas Women’s University, 28-15, before defeating Trinidad State Junior College, 28-21.

Minot State travels to the University of Jamestown to dual with the Jimmies on Sunday, Jan. 18, at 2 p.m.
