The Minot State women’s hockey team won its 10th game of the season in a 2-1 victory over Indiana Tech at All Seasons Arena on Friday, Jan. 17, but it was more significant than most for head coach Ryan Miner.
The nine-year head coach of the Beavers notched a career milestone in the process, earning his 200th career victory behind the bench.
Abby Pineau and Abby Tallman made the milestone a reality with a goal a piece and goaltender Jillian Ackerman made 24 saves. Pineau got the Beavers on the board at 14:16 of the opening period and Tallman provided a 2-0 cushion with 12:12 remaining in regulation.
Indiana Tech created some late-game drama, as Allison Greene scored shorthanded with 2:28 left, but the Beavers limited the Warriors to just six shots in the third period. Minot State held a 38-25 advantage in shots on goal.
The victory moved Miner’s career record with the Beavers to 200-53-7-7 (W-L-T-OTL). Miner took over head coaching duties for the Beavers in 2017-18 and has had a winning season every year. He’s led the Beavers to two ACHA Division II championship games and two ACHA Division I championship games. Minot State has advanced to the National Tournament every season under Miner.
Miner earned his 100th career coaching victory in his fifth season, beating Concordia College on Oct. 30, 2021.
Victory No. 201 came the following night in dominating fashion, as Journey Miller netted five goals and the Beavers (11-6-5) routed Indiana Tech, 10-2, on Saturday, Jan. 17, at All Seasons Arena. Miller netted a hat trick by the second period and added two more goals in the third period and also registered an assist for a six-point night.
Miller’s big night was just one goal short of tying the program record for goals in a single game. That record belongs to both Sami Jo Henry and Mackenzie Balogh, who both scored six goals in a game during the 2018-19 season.
Miller wasn’t the only Beaver lighting the lamp on Saturday. Karlyn Gudz potted two and Paige Crossley, Paige Kozak and Abby Tallman all added another as Minot State produced its most scoring since netting 11 goals over Minnesota on Feb. 25, 2022. Thirteen skaters registered a point in the victory.
The Beavers head to Chesterfield, Mo., to take part in the WMCH Showcase for three games in three days. Minot State plays Lindenwood on Thursday, Jan. 22, at 11:40 a.m., followed by McKendree on Friday at 2 p.m. and Liberty on Saturday and 12:30 p.m. The Showcase concludes with an all-star game on Sunday at noon.
