Women’s Basketball: Hamling’s 30 points rallies Beavers past Sioux Falls
Minot State redshirt sophomore guard Taryn Hamling netted a career-high 30 points, helping the women’s basketball team rally from an 11-point deficit in the third quarter for an 83-65 victory over Sioux Falls on Saturday, Jan. 17.
All five starters finished in double figures. Hamling hit 11 of 20 shots and went 6-for-11 from the 3-point line.
The Beavers (8-11 overall, 5-7 NSIC) scored just eight points in the second quarter, shooting 18.8 percent from the field. Minot State’s offensive struggles allowed the Cougars (8-10, 5-7) to take a 38-23 lead at halftime. A layup by Hamling trimmed the deficit to single digits at 48-39 with 3:51 remaining in the third quarter. She hit a 3 with six seconds remaining in the quarter to tie the game at 50.
The Beavers took the lead for good on a Hamling 3-pointer with 8:29 left. Hamling’s 3 kickstarted a 14-0 run. Tityahna Trottier and Maya Aguilar both hit a 3 during the run.
Aguilar was one rebound short of a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing nine rebounds.
Krista Langager led the Cougars with 16 points.
Minot State opened the weekend with another big night from Hamling and SW Minnesota State, but it wasn’t enough to propel the Beavers to another second-half comeback.
Hamling went 7-for-12 from the field, scoring a team-high 20 points. Aguilar added 19 points and eight rebounds.
The Mustangs (10-7, 8-4) took control of the game in the second quarter, outscoring the Beavers 31-20 to take a 49-39 lead at halftime. They continued to grow their lead in the second half, pushing the lead to 18 at the end of the third quarter.
Kylan Gerads had a game-high 21 points for the Mustangs.
The Beavers host Augustana on Friday, Jan. 23, at 5:30 p.m.
