Men’s Wrestling: Beavers drop conference dual to Mustangs

Both the Minot State and Southwest Minnesota State men’s wrestling teams won five matches a piece, but the difference came down to pins.

The Mustangs earned three pins resulting in six points each, while the Beavers won all their matches via decisions and major decisions, allowing SW Minnesota State to come away with a 24-15 victory in an NSIC dual at the MSU Dome on Sunday, Jan. 25.

SW Minnesota State (2-9 overall, 1-5 NSIC) jumped out to a 9-0 lead after two matches. Dylan St. Germain pinned Austin Garcia in 4 minutes at 125 pounds and Chase Hanson scored a 9-4 decision over Cole Faircloth at 133.

Ethan Wonser delivered Minot State (5-9, 1-5) its first victory with an 8-7 decision over Bronson Richins. Wonser’s victory via decision was one of four victories by decision. Daniels Bendiks (165), Shafer Ehmke (197) and Braxton Rance (285) also won via decision. Gavin Turk won his match with a 20-7 major decision over Noah Jensen at 174.

Jacob Messner and Tate Condezo scored pins for the Mustangs at 149 and 157, respectively.

The Beavers were deducted a point from their team score for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Minot State heads to Aberdeen, S.D., to dual with Northern State on Friday, Feb. 6, at 7 p.m.

Women’s Wrestling: Beavers split tri-dual with Dickinson State, Bismarck State

Lovey Beebe won both of her matches at 138 pounds and the Minot State women’s wrestling team split a pair of duals at the MSU Dome on Sunday, Jan. 25. The Beavers dropped a 28-19 decision to Dickinson State to open the day and defeated Bismarck State, 30-17, to close the duals.

The Blue Hawks won six matches – three via pins, two by technical falls and one by forfeit. Dickinson won the first four matches after forfeiting the 103-pound match.

Beebe and Haleigh Lematta scored wins for the Beavers at 138 and 145, respectively. Beebe pinned Makenzie Shaw in 3:54 and Lematta earned a 10-0 technical fall over Izzabella Davis in 2:47. Lillian Garrett won the other match for the Beavers, pinning Bridgette Price in 1:27.

The Beavers (6-7) took down the Mystics thanks largely to their depth. Minot State won just one match, but scored 25 points from five forfeits. Bismarck State won three of the four matches wrestled.

Beebe scored the lone match victory for the Beavers with an 8-0 decision over Adrian Steidler to close out the dual.

Bismarck State scored four victories in four different fashions. The Mystics won by forfeit, pin, technical fall and decision.
