Girls Hockey: Minot United gets much-needed win over Dickinson

The Minot United girls hockey team knows that if it wants to be playing hockey at Scheels Arena in Fargo on the final three days of February, it needs to start putting pucks in the net and points in the standings.

Minot United managed to do both on Tuesday, Jan. 6, snapping both a three-game losing streak and a 100-plus minute goal drought in a 2-1 victory over Dickinson in its first game at Maysa Arena in nearly a month.

Following a scoreless opening period – the seventh consecutive goalless stanza for Minot United – the home team broke through for a pair of goals to grab a 2-0 lead. Julia Stoner capitalized on the power play at 6:16 with the assist from Brynn Hanson. Stoner was on the assisting end of Minot United’s second goal, finding Yvonne Slind for her first marker of the season at 12:32 of the middle stanza.

Minot United (3-7-1-0 overall, 2-7-1-0 state) outshot the Mavericks, 16-7, in the second period after yielding 12 of the 16 shots on goal in the opening frame.

Dickinson (3-8-1-0, 2-8-1-0) peppered Minot United goaltender Faith Seekings with 15 shots in the third period. Alayna Lippert got the Mavericks on the board with 6:54 remaining to cut Minot United’s lead in half, but Seekings kept everything in front of her from there to preserve the win.

Seekings finished with 33 saves.

With the win, Minot United earned three points in the standings, jumping them over Williston and bringing them just a point behind Jamestown for the eighth and final spot in the state tournament field.

Minot United heads back on the road to play Mandan on Saturday, Jan. 10, at 2 p.m. at Starion Sports Complex.

Starting at $2.99/week.
