Cardinals break win streak

The Nedrose Cardinals girls’ basketball team broke their win streak with their 50-56 home game loss against the 6-1 Tioga Pirates on Monday night, Jan. 5.

Tioga won the first tip off and was the first to put points on the board. The Pirates went up to a 4-0 lead before Nedrose junior guard Hannah Beuchler sank a three-pointer for the Cardinals’ first points on the board. The Pirates quickly ran up another four points with the Cardinals close behind. Both teams fought neck and neck through the end of the first quarter, where the Cardinals brought the game within a single point, the closest the score had been the entire game.

The Pirates were once again the first to put points on the board in the second quarter, but a three point shot by freshman Ganessa Lemere gave Nedrose its first tie of the game at 14-14. The Cardinals then took the lead at 16-14 a two point layup by freshman Rylee Hammer after a pass from Beuchler. Tioga did not stay down for long, quickly taking the lead back at 16-18 with just over five minutes left in the first half. The Pirates widened their lead to four before the Cardinals responded with a three-pointer to bring them within a point. The Pirates kept up the pressures through the rest of the second quarter, ending with a lead of 23-31 over the Cardinals.

Tioga scored the first two points of the third quarter, but it was junior Hannah Beuchler that once again kickstarted the second half for Nedrose. The Cardinals fought hard to try and work their way back to a close game, but for every point Nedrose made, the Pirates stayed just enough ahead to keep out of the single-basket range. The third quarter ended with a closer score for the Cardinals at 38-42, but that was as close as they would get to toppling the Pirates. Tioga was able to secure 16 points during the fourth quarter, while the Cardinals only earned 12, ending with a Cardinals loss at 58-50 and ending their four game win streak.

The Cardinals fell to a record of 6-3 on the season and the Pirates improved to a 7-1 record. The Nedrose Cardinals are back at home for their next game against the South Prairie-Max Royals on Thursday, Jan. 8.
