Girls Hockey: Minot United snaps scoreless, losing streaks
It was far from an offensive onslaught, but at this point, the Minot United girls hockey team were happy to put up a single goal. In this instance, it also happened to be enough to capture their first regulation victory, defeating Fargo Davies, 1-0, on Saturday, Dec. 20, to snap a four-game losing streak.
Ayla Jackson scored the only goal of the contest, snapping a scoreless spell for Minot United that stretched 182:13 minutes dating back to the second period against Grand Forks on Dec. 6. Since then, Minot United had been unable to score a goal in 10 straight periods and were shutout by Bismarck Century, Legacy/Bismarck and Jamestown in the process. Minot United is averaging 1.57 goals per game this season.
While Jackson’s goal proved to be the difference maker, the hero for Minot United (2-4-1-0 overall, 1-4-1-0 state) on Saturday was goaltender Faith Seekings, who earned the shutout with a 44-save performance. The Eagles (2-2-2-0, 2-2-2-0) outshot Minot United 44-11. Fargo Davies accumulated 37 shots on goal through the final two periods compared to just four for Minot United, but Seekings stopped every shot she faced and helped kill off three Eagles power plays as well.
The win gives Minot United their first in regulation. Their only other victory this season came in overtime against Devils Lake. Minot United received a much-needed three points in the state standings and now sits one point out of eighth for the final spot in the state tournament.
Minot United plays their final game of the calendar year at Williston on Tuesday, Dec. 30, at 6 p.m.
