Julia Stoner scored 6:27 into overtime to propel the Minot United girls hockey team to a 4-3 victory over Devils Lake at Maysa Arena on Friday, Dec. 5, for the team’s first points of the season in the state standings.

The overtime victory gave Minot United two points in the standings, with Devils Lake earning the other point. Stoner scored earlier in the contest, giving Minot United a 2-1 lead with 1:54 remaining in the opening period.

Brynn Hanson also netted a pair of goals, while tallying two assists for a four-point game. Hanson opened the scoring 1:31 into the game and gave Minot United a brief 3-2 lead early in the second period.

Minot United (1-1-1-0 overall, 0-1-1-0 state) held the lead on three occasions, but the Firebirds (0-1-0-1, 0-1-0-1) responded all three times. Miley Duciaume played a role in all three of Devils Lake’s goals, scoring the first two and assisting on the third to force overtime.

Minot United goaltender Faith Seekings finished with 25 saves – two coming in the extra session. Minot United outshot the Firebirds 10-2 in overtime and 38-28 for the game.

Minot United was locked in another close contest the following afternoon, but surrendered three unanswered goals in the third period in a 5-2 loss to Grand Forks on Saturday, Dec. 6, at Maysa Arena.

Alaina Marto registered a natural hat trick in the third period and finished with four goals. She has six goals in four games this season, tied for second-most in the state.

Stoner netted her third goal of the weekend at 7:38 of the second period to tie the game 2-2. Ava Beda scored the other goal for Minot United. Stoner is tied for the fourth-most goals in the state with five.

Grand Forks held a 35-18 advantage in shots, limiting Minot United to just two shots over the final 17 minutes.

Seekings finished with 30 saves for a weekend total of 55.

Minot United travels to face defending state champion Legacy/Bismarck on Tuesday, Dec. 9, at 7:15 p.m.
