Class AA Boys Basketball: Brandt secures 500th career coaching win in Magi victory over Saints

Minot High boys basketball coach Jeremy Brandt has only been coaching the Magicians for four games now, but this isn’t his first job as leader of a program.

Brandt’s been at this for a while, as evident by his most recent milestone achievement. Brandt secured his 500th career coaching victory during Minot High’s 89-73 win at Bismarck St. Mary’s on Tuesday, Dec. 16.

Oakley Trueblood finished with a team-high 33 points. Patrick Shanahan poured in 21 and Drew Jordan added 18 to lead Minot High’s offensive production.

The Magicians (3-1 overall, 1-0 WDA) held a slim 41-39 edge at halftime before pulling away in the second half to secure Brandt’s 500th victory. Prior to taking the head coaching position at Minot High, Brandt had spent nearly 30 years leading other programs at Sherwood, Bottineau and Beulah. Brandt spent the last 15 years with Beulah, winning a state title in 2012.

The Saints (3-1, 0-1) had four players finish in double figures, led by Trason Terry’s 21. Christian Benning finished with 19 points, while Jackson Barth and Brooks Armstrong contributed 13 and 10, respectively.

The Magicians host Bismarck High on Friday, Dec. 19, at 7:45 p.m.

Minot North was on the opposite side of a milestone, as the Sentinels allowed 100 points to Bismarck Legacy in a 100-49 defeat on the same day. The Sentinels found themselves trailing by 40 at halftime, surrendering 54 points in the opening 18 minutes.

Jonathan Roubideaux and Makiya Berryhill paced the offense for the Sabers (3-1, 1-0) with 24 and 19 points, respectively.

TJ Hjelmstad led the Sentinels (0-3, 0-1) with 16 points.

Minot North travels to Dickinson on Friday, Dec. 19, at 8:30 p.m.

Starting at $2.99/week.
