Boys Wrestling: Kraft wins individual title, 7 others place at Valley City Invite

Minot United’s Korbin Kraft won all three of his matches via submission to claim the 139-pound title, becoming one of eight Magicians to place in their respective weight classes at the Valley City Holiday Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 20.

Kraft – the No. 1 seed in the tournament bracket – received a first-round bye into the quarterfinals, where he pinned Fergus Falls (Minn.)’s John Garding in 1:10 to advance to the semifinals. He made quick work of Thief River Falls’ Brian Berg, pinning him in just 31 seconds. In the championship match, Kraft submitted West Fargo Sheyenne’s Jetton Wadeson in 3:27. Kraft was leading in all three of his matches when he pinned his respective opponents.

Minot United picked up top-eight finishes in six other weight classes. They had one wrestler place at 107, 127, 133, 152, 160 and two in 215. Jack Combs and Tucker Nelson each finished third at 107 and 215, respectively. Combs picked up a 15-0 technical fall over Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton’s Emmytt Ketterling in 3:04, recording three nearfalls in the process during the third-place match. Nelson and teammate Evan Berg each advanced to the third-place match at 215, but the match was forfeited.

Tayven Blackaby lost his opening-round match, but ripped off three consecutive victories to put himself in the third-place match against D-G-F’s Sam Schmitz. In a close match, Schmitz earned a 2-1 decision, scoring a two-point reversal with 1:08 remaining in the final round.

Jaxson Schumann (133), Landen Silvis (152) and Gavin Tanberg (160) all advanced to the seventh-place match in their respective weight classes. Silvis took seventh via forfeit, while Schumann and Tanberg each placed eighth.
