Boys Basketball: Dale Brown Hoopster Classic Roundup Day 1
The Dale Brown Hoopster Classic tipped off at the Minot State University Dome on Saturday, Dec. 27 with four games on the boys side. Along with Hazen’s last-minute victory over Velva and Beulah’s decisive victory over Rugby, Stanley and Powers Lake-Burke Central also posted wins in their opening games.
Stanley opened the showcase with a 60-48 victory over TGU. The Blue Jays limited the Titans to seven points in the opening quarter and held a 27-21 lead at halftime. An explosive third quarter allowed Stanley to create some distance, taking an 18-point lead into the fourth quarter.
Jevon Johnson led all scorers with 25 points. Austin Kanenwisher (12) and Ashton Peterson (10) also finished in double figures.
Travis Reed poured in 20 points for the Titans.
Powers Lake-Burke Central closed out the night with a defensive 49-39 win against Westhope-Newburg.
The Ranchers fell behind 13-10 at the end of the first quarter, but limited the Sioux to five points in the second quarter to grab a 22-18 lead at the break. Westhope-Newburg scored a quarter-best 17 points in the third to square the contest at 35 headed into the fourth. Powers Lake-BC clamped down defensively, holding the Sioux to four points and come away with the victory.
Jager Breding and Oakley Grubb scored 12 and 10 points, respectively. Hunter Tolstad led the Sioux with 17 points.
