Aggies fall for seventh straight loss
The Velva High School girls’ basketball team are still in search of their first win of the season after their 2-69 loss against the Lewis & Clark-Berthold Bombers on the road Monday night Dec. 22.
Monday’s game is the last for the Aggies before they rest for the holiday. The Bombers’ defense had a strong presence on the court through the first two quarters of the game. The Bombers not only struck first in the first quarter of the game, but their impenetrable defense let them rack up the first 29 points of the game. The first quarter ended scoreless for the Aggies, with the Bombers up 25-0. The second quarter was just as tough for the Aggies to get past the Bomber defense. Freshman Marlee Kittleson was the first to score for the Aggies. With just under five minutes left in the second quarter, senior Leah Volochenko drove the ball down the court after the Bombers scored and made a quick pass to Kittleson. An unguarded Kittleson was able to quickly turn the pass around and shoot the ball from the back corner, swishing the ball and earning the Aggies their first three points of the night. The Aggies earned just six more points before the end of the first half. Kittleson secured another two-point bucket to put her half total to five points and sophomore Evalyn Selzler was the only other Aggie to score in the first half, earning four points off of one bucket and two completed free-throws. The Aggies were trailing the Bombers 9-40 at the half.
The Bombers were able to score five unanswered points in the first half of the third quarter, but Selzler put up two points to get the Aggies to double digit points on a two-point shot under pressure. The Aggies were able to get up to 17 points by the end of the third quarter, still trailing behind the Bombers at 17-55. The Aggies went on a five point run for themselves through the course of the fourth quarter from 19 to 24 points, but the Aggies offense was too much for them to keep up with, and the game ended with an Aggie loss at 25-69.
The Aggies are still looking for their first win this season as they fell to 0-7 on Monday night. The Lewis & Clark-Berthold Bombers improved on the season to a winning 4-3 record after their victory on Monday. The Bombers will remain on the road for their first game after the holidays at Tioga High School on Thursday, Jan. 2, for their first game of the new year.
