Women’s Wrestling: Lematta 2nd, Herbin, Jones each 4th at Waldorf Open
The Minot State women’s wrestling team opened its season with strong showings from Haleigh Lematta, Aniya Herbin and Alyssa Jones at the Waldorf Open on Saturday, Nov. 8.
All three won four matches on the day. Lematta (145 pounds), claimed a runner-up finish in her weight class, while Herbin (207) took home fourth-place honors. Jones competed in the freshman/sophomore division at 131 and secured a fourth-place finish as well.
Lematta won her first four matches of the day, opening with a 10-0 technical fall against Maria Sanfiel. She strung together back-to-back decisions against Mina Himmel and Ann Meiman before advancing to the title match with another 10-0 technical fall, this time against Sara Daley. Lematta would settle for second after being pinned by Sioux Falls’ Kristy More in 2:02.
Herbin started her tournament with three consecutive wins. She pinned Jamestown’s Celia Jaeger in 1:37 and won via 11-0 technical fall against Madison Robinson. She won an 8-5 decision against USF’s Zoe Adam before suffering her first defeat with a pin at the hands of Harmoni Callins in 1:42. She rallied with a technical fall over Aaliyah Presley to advance to the third-place match, getting pinned by Libby Dix in 2:56 for fourth.
Jones’ day consisted of two victories via pins over Braya Cruz and Jaiden McLaren, a technical fall over Nicole Martens and a 6-0 decision against Abigail Ji.
Other Beavers winning matches included Skyee Shelmerdine (124), Puakela Beebe (138), Chloe Parsons (145), Aliana Barnoski (160), Gracie Tolman (160), Madilyn Schuck (160), Lillian Garrett (180) and Dahlia Silva (207).
The Beavers compete in the NSIC Duals in Sioux Falls, S.D., on Sunday, Nov. 16, at 2 p.m.
