Women’s Hockey: Beavers take two points from No. 1 Midland

The Minot State women’s hockey team weren’t able to come away with a victory against the top-ranked team in the country, but it fared much better than most.

The fourth-ranked Beavers picked up a point in both games over the weekend, tying No. 1 Midland, 2-2, on Friday, Oct. 31, before falling 2-1 in overtime the following day during a two-game series at Maysa Arena.

The Beavers (4-2-6) led twice in Friday’s opener, with Krissy Rink giving Minot State a 1-0 lead midway through the opening period. Midland’s Kiara McGregor would even the game in the final minute of the stanza with the first of two power-play goals for the Warriors.

Olivia Opheim delivered a power-play goal of MSU’s own 37 seconds into the third period to re-establish a one-goal lead, but this one lasted just the blink of an eye as Midland’s Taylor Bell scored just over a minute later on the power play.

The Warriors (17-1-1) heavily outshot the Beavers to the tune of 40-23, but MSU goaltender Jillian Ackerman helped the Beavers earn a point with 38 saves.

Minot State again scored first on Saturday. Cameron Schmidt netted her team’s lone goal of the afternoon three minutes into the contest and the Beavers would hold on to that advantage through the first two frames.

Midland found the equalizer at 8:07 of the third period on a goal from Grace Page that would eventually force overtime. Callie Maguire would win it during the 3-on-3 session to avoid a second consecutive tie.

The Warriors fired 37 shots on goal to Minot State’s 19.

Ackerman finished with 35 saves and 73 for the weekend.

Minot State travels to Jamestown for a weekend series with the Jimmies beginning on Friday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m.

Starting at $2.99/week.
