Prep Wrestling: Minot High opens season with Early Bird Tournament

The Minot High boys and girls wrestling teams got their first taste of competition this season as it hosted its annual Early Bird Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 22, at Magic City Campus.

The girls program saw first-place finishes in three weight classes and the boys took home a pair of individual titles. Ella Brown (112), Khylie Schlotz (118) and Jade’ence Fletcher (190) won their respective weight classes on the girls side, while Jack Combs (114) and Korbin Kraft (152) did the game for the boys.

Brown defeated Watford City’s Sari Sorenson via pin in 1 minute, 24 seconds. She won all three of her matches via submission.

Schlotz pinned Valley City’s Bethani Schuldheisz in two minutes in the title match. She, too, pinned opponents for all three of her victories. Her first two matches took less than 40 seconds.

Fletcher made quick work of Turtle Mountain’s Aryonna Gourneau in the title match, pinning her in just 13 seconds.

Brooklyn Ost (106), Fatimazahra Elbouab (124) and Kierstyn Nevels also placed in their respective weight classes.

On the boys side, Jack Combs won a best-of-3 match with Carrington’s Mason Cook. Combs won the first match via pin in 1:15. Cook took the second match by an 11-5 decision and Combs delivered a 10-5 decision in the decisive match to win the 114 title.

Kraft needed just a pair of victories to win his weight class after receiving a bye to the semifinals as the top seed. He pinned Williston’s Corey Getzlaff to advance to the championship, where he pinned Carrington’s Gabe Clifton in 2:55.

Ian Halseth (121), Eliah Rogers (127), Jaxson Schumann (139) and Kale Risbrudt (285) also placed.
