Prep Volleyball: Majettes pick up 5-set win; Des Lacs-Burlington, Surrey drop consolation matches
It was a tough day for local teams competing in the state volleyball tournament, with four of the five losing.
The one local team who picked up a win on the second day of the tournament was Minot High. The Majettes picked up their first win at the state tournament in a five-set victory over West Fargo Horace, 18-25, 29-27, 25-23, 16-25, 15-6, in a consolation semifinal match on Friday, Nov. 21, at the Bismarck Event Center.
The Majettes had three players finish with double-digit kills, led by Everette Deschamp’s 19. Kynsli Gillmore had 15 kills and Hadlea Haul added 10. Deschamp also contributed 26 digs. Gillmore added 19 digs and two aces, while Faul recorded 2.5 blocks.
Horace and Minot High won their sets in different fashions. The Hawks won the first and fourth sets by a comfortable margin, while the Majettes won the second and third sets with single-digit leads. The fifth set was the Majette’s widest margin of victory.
“We started a little slow with small miscues and our own errors,” Minot High coach Jesse Goertzen said. “We picked it up in the 2nd set and started to get more digs and have smarter shots on offense. We fought hard the entire match and went on a big run to open up the fifth set. Offensively, we spread the ball around really well and played complimentary volleyball as our defense was incredible.
