Men’s Hockey: Beavers use strong third period to down rival U-Mary
The second-ranked Minot State men’s hockey team scored three goals in the final period en route to a 5-1 victory over No. 12 U-Mary on Friday, Oct. 31, at Maysa Arena.
In the first of five meetings between the rival programs, the Beavers broke open a one-goal game with a trio of goals in the final 20 minutes to extend their winning streak to six games. They have still not dropped a game in regulation.
Jay Buchholz and Colby Joseph factored into two of the three goals in the final frame, with Buchholz giving the Beavers (7-0-1) a bit of breathing room at 5:08 of the third period with his third goal of the season.
Buchholz would tack on his third assist of the year a few minutes later when he fed Joseph for his sixth goal of the season to give Minot State a 4-1 lead. And Joseph paid it forward on the power play with two minutes to go, setting up Matthew Yakubowski to seal the victory.
Minot State never trailed, taking the lead at 6:18 of the first period on a goal from Sheldin Howard. U-Mary (9-5-0) would tie it up on a power-play goal from Isaac Flatley later in the period.
Logan Cyca netted what would be the game-winning 3:41 into the second. Cyca, Howard, Buchholz, Joseph and Christian Kadolph all had two-point nights for the Beavers.
MSU goaltender Will Dyke picked up the victory between the pipes, stopping 31 of 32 shots faced. U-Mary’s Zane Clausen suffered the loss with a 29-save performance.
The Beavers and Marauders don’t have to wait long to renew their rivalry, as the two will meet in Bismarck on Saturday, Nov. 8, at 7 p.m.
