Sheyenne repeats as boys dual tennis state champs
Make it 32.
For the 32nd year in a row, a team from the East Region claimed the state title in the boys tennis dual state tournament, and for the second straight year, it was West Fargo Sheyenne keeping the streak going.
The top-seeded Mustangs defended their state title with a 4-1 victory over Grand Forks Central in the championship match in Grand Forks on Thursday, Oct. 9. Sheyenne swept Jamestown in the quarterfinal and defeated Grand Forks Red River, 3-2, in the semifinals.
Sheyenne captured the title thanks in large part to the performance of their doubles play, which went a perfect 6-0 with Carson Peterson and Jordan Clemenson at No. 1 and Nicholas Angus and Tyler Duffer at No. 2. It proved to be the difference in the semifinals against the RoughRiders, trailing 2-1 heading into the doubles matches. In that match, Peterson and Clemenson defeated Max Mecham and Mac McDonald, 6-1, 6-3, and the Mustangs clinched a spot in the title match when Angus and Duffy topped Kevin Martinez and Kyler Bydal, 6-2, 6-4.
The Mustangs needed to win just one of their two doubles matches in the championship, but won both for good measure. Peterson and Clemenson delivered the championship point with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Brady Fee and Kasen Panzer. Angus and Duffy capped off the undefeated doubles run with a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Henning Gibbs and Charlie Miedema.
Leighton Heick went 3-0 at No. 2 singles for the Mustangs and Brandt Aslakson finished 2-1 at No. 1 singles. Sheyenne finished the season a perfect 24-0.
Mandan was the top performing team from the West Region as the only ones to win its quarterfinal match. The West’s No. 1 seed defeated Fargo North, 3-2, and eventually finished fourth.
The Magicians placed sixth for just the third time in program history. They also finished sixth in 2016 and 2018. They dropped their quarterfinal round match to Grand Forks Central, 4-1, but got a win at No. 1 singles from Nolan Moore over Jason Ling, 7-6 (8), 4-6, 10-8.
Minot extended its season by an additional match with a 3-2 victory over Fargo North in a consolation semifinal. Oliver Thompson and Connor Ressler delivered wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Henrik Evanoff and Tyson Barden gave the Magicians the match victory with a 6-4, 6-7 (4), 10-5 win over Nate Wilson and Dhimant Mannuru. The other doubles match was equally close, but went in favor of the Spartans as Thomas Webb and Matthew Vandrovec edged out Calvin Olson and Owen Sundahl 7-6 (6), 2-6, 10-7.
The Magicians concluded their season by dropping a 3-2 decision to Bismarck Legacy in the fifth-place match. Thompson recorded his second victory of the tournament with a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Declain Hosek. Ressler and Evanoff teamed up at No. 1 doubles and came away with a 3-6, 7-5, 12-10 victory over Braxton Spooner and Carter Madison.
Minot finished the season 18-8.
