Men’s Hockey: Beavers complete weekend sweep of Midland with OT victory
With a matchup with top-ranked and defending national champion UNLV looming next, the Minot State men’s hockey team completed a weekend sweep of Midland University on the road, defeating the Warriors, 4-2, on Friday, Oct. 24, and 4-3 in overtime on Saturday, Oct. 25.
The Beavers fell behind early in the second period in the opener before scoring four unanswered to pull away. Joey Moffatt got the Beavers on the board first at 6:21 of the second period and Colby Joseph put his team in front for good as part of a three-goal third period. Brett Tataryn added a pair of goals less than two minutes apart as the Beavers held a 41-32 advantage in shots on goal.
The Beavers (5-0-1) played a clean game, staying out of the penalty box.
Blake Slittler got the starting nod in net for Minot State, earning the win with a 30-save performance. Liam Tereposky suffered the loss for the Warriors (2-6-2), finishing with 37 saves.
Minot State seemed well in control in Saturday’s contest, leading 3-0 early in the third period. After a second consecutive scoreless opening frame, Joseph and Jay Buchholz gave the Beavers a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes. Christian Kadolph grew the lead to three on a power-play goal at 3:13 of the third, but Midland rallied to force overtime with a trio of goals before the end of the final frame. Thomas Babb, Karl Grafelman and Matthew Odoherty found the back of the net to extend the game.
Overtime barely lasted a blink of an eye, as Logan Rands lit the lamp just 17 seconds into the extra session to send the Beavers home a winner. Slade Stanick and Buchholz tallied the game-winning assists.
The Beavers heavily outshot the Warriors 42-16, but Tereposky gave his team a chance with 38 saves. Will Dyke finished with 13 saves for MSU.
Next up for the Beavers is a contest with No. 1 UNLV at Maysa Arena on Tuesday, Oct. 28, at 7:30 p.m.
