Majettes dominate meet versus Bismarck

The Minot High Majettes swim & dive team dominated in their dual meet against Bismarck High School at home on Tuesday, Oct. 21, 120-61.
The Tuesday night meet featured twelve events for both teams to compete in. The first event started at 5 p.m. with the 200 Yard Medley Relay. The Minot High A team took home first place in the event with a final time of two minutes 0.29 seconds. Senior Samantha VokBokern started off for the A team with a 29.3 second back stroke over her 50 yards of the relay. Junior Greer Schaeffer kept the pace next with her 35.63 second breast stroke. The third leg of the team was swam by sophomore Katy Andersen with the butterfly stroke and sophomore Kirby Quam finished off the A team’s winning run with a 26.54 freestyle swim. Bismarck’s top relay team ended the race with a final time of two minutes 1.92 seconds to take second place. From there, the Minot and Bismarck relay teams alternated positions until the Bismarck High’s C team was disqualified.
The second event of the meet featured twelve swimmers over two heats and ended with two Minot swimmers earning first and second place.Eighth grader Kacee Makeef took first in the 200 Yard Free swim with a time of 2 minutes 12.07 seconds. Senior Hailee Vandez took second place, coming in just behind her teammate with a time of two minutes 12.11 seconds. Junior Greer Schaeffer was the only other Minot High girl to place in the event, taking home fourth place with a time of two minutes 16.67 seconds. The 200 Yard Individual Medley was the first event that Bismarck was able to win. Their junior swimmer Madeline VerDouw took the first place slot with a time of two minutes 15,54 seconds. The highest placing swimmer for the Majettes was sophomore swimmer Ella Johnson with a time of two minutes 30.49 seconds. The Individual Medley has the swimmers use each of the four strokes for 50 meters each.
The fourth event saw Minot High return to the top spot on the podium with Samantha VonBokern’s 25.23 first place finish in the 50 Yard Free race. Junior Emily Dustan and sophomore Kirby Quam filled the second and third spots respectively. Junior Gracyn Bergan won the One Meter Dive with her score of 270.85, scoring over 100 points more than the second place finisher. Samanta VonBokern earned another first place finish with her one minute 0.29 seconds in the 100 Yard Butterfly race and Kirby Quam earned another podium finish, taking first place in the 100 Yard Free swim with a time of 58.86 seconds.Bismarck’s Madeline VerDouw took home her second first place finish for her five minute 33.76 second time in the 500 Yard Free race. Minot junior Emily Dunstan took home second place with her time of 5 minutes 43.08 seconds. The Majettes won the next event with a time of one minute 48.35 seconds in the 200 Yard Free Relay. Minot’s Maggie Fricke earned her first win of the night in the 100 Yard Backstroke with a time of one minute 8.24 seconds and Bismarck earned another win when their junior swimmer Aubrey Vatnsdal took first in the 100 Yard Breaststroke with a time of one minute 23.17 seconds.
The last event of the meet was the 400 Yard Free Relay where the Majettes took home another first place finish from the Minot A team with a final time of three minutes 53.56 seconds. Samantha VonBokers was the highest earning swimmer for the Majettes with 12 points, tying with Bismarck’s junior Madeline VerDouw for most individual points in the meet.
The Majettes will compete again at 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24.
