Hill returns to Minot to host Magic City Mayhem

The Minot Municipal Auditorium is set to house the first ever Magic City Mayhem, a professional boxing event with an Air Force versus Marines main card fight this Saturday, Oct. 25.

North Dakota boxing legend Virgil Hill is making his return to the Peace Garden state to host Saturday’s event in an effort to give back.

“This is really Virgil and mine’s promotion,” said Olympic gold medalist and Quicksilver Hill Sports co-founder Denean Hill. “We are just trying to bring boxing back to North Dakota from when Virgil brought title fights back to North Dakota when he was fighting.”

Virgil Hill, also known as “Quicksilver”, is a five-time world champion boxer and holds titles in the lightweight and cruiser weight division. Virgil was born in Clinton, MO and first moved to North Dakota in 1969 where he went on to train and compete in boxing. Hill’s professional career in boxing first took off after winning the silver medal in the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Virgil’s career helped put millions of eyes on North Dakota, and now, he wants to bring boxing back.

Saturday’s event will consist of ten professional level boxing matches and will feature local athletes like Minot’s own Lopez twins. Rafael and Jose Lopez were born in Kentucky and moved to Minot when they were just one year old. Both brothers grew up in the ring and already have some high-level competition experience under their belt. Jose Jose was a silver medalist at the Mexico Nationals at fifteen in the 115-pound weight class and Rafael won a USA Boxing sanctioned amateur tournament in South Dakota in the same age bracket and weight class as his brother, but Saturday will be their first debut in the world of professional boxing.

“[They] have been working really hard through the amateur program and have had a lot of success,” said Denean. “The Lopez brothers are hopefully the next North Dakotians that will come though and be successful in fighting pro. That’s Virgil’s way of trying to give back to the state of North Dakota and allow them to bring boxing back to the state.”

Saturday’s card will feature an Air Force versus Marines main event, pitting Willie Johnican of the Minot Air Force base against Misael De La Cruz of the Marines. De La Cruz is one of Virgil’s fights and will be traveling to Minot for Saturday’s contest. The Minot Air Force base will have another representative in the event in Antonio Lovett. Both Lopez twins will be making their professional debut on Saturday with Jose Lopez taking on Connor Clark from Kalamazoo, MI and Rafael is pitted against Malik Alexander, also from Kalamazoo. The main event of the evening will see professional boxers Jalen Walker (14-1-1) and Pedro Pinillo (6-12-0) clash in the ring.

Doors open for the event at 5 p.m. at the Minot Municipal Auditorium and the fights will begin at 6 p.m.

Starting at $2.99/week.
