Prep Volleyball: Majettes top Saints in 4 sets; Sentinels swept by undefeated Patriots

The Minot High volleyball team found itself locked in a tight contest on the road against Bismarck St. Mary’s, but won the necessary points down the stretch to come away with a four-set victory over the Saints, 25-15, 14-25, 27-25, 25-23, on Thursday, Sept. 18.

The first two sets were more one sided, with each team coming away with a victory to square the match heading into the third set. The rest of the match came down to just a few points, and it was the Majettes that were able to secure them to remain toward the top of the West Region standings. The final two sets were decided by a grand total of four points, with the third set needing to go long to determine a winner.

Kynsli Gillmore led the Majettes (7-5 overall, 5-1 West Region) with 11 kills. Eve Knutson also recorded double-digit kills with 10. Mackenzie Dufner had a team-high 39 assists, 3.5 blocks and two aces.. The Majettes as a team combined for 10 blocks. Camdyn Varty finished with a match-high 32 digs.

Mataya Messer had 17 kills for the Saints (2-10, 1-5).

Minot North pushed undefeated Bismarck Century early, but the Patriots showed why they are the top team in the state currently, sweeping the Sentinels, 26-24, 25-18, 25-17.

Century has swept five of its first six opponents in West Region play, dropping just one set. Minot North has now lost five consecutive conference matches.

The opening set required extra points, but just barely as Century won the final two points after being tied at 24. The rest of the match belonged to the Patriots, who received a match-high 14 kills from Sylvia Taylor and 12 from Alexis Heinle. Heinle also recorded four blocks.

Elli Laskowski finished with 11 kills to lead the Sentinels.

The Majettes and Sentinels return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 23. Minot High hosts Jamestown, while Minot North welcomes Mandan. Both matches start at 7 p.m.

Boys Tennis: Minot sweeps singles play in non-conference victory over Williston

The Minot High boys tennis team closed out a busy week comprising three matches over four days with a convincing 6-1 victory over Williston in a non-conference match on Thursday, Sept. 18.

The Magicians (14-4) swept all four singles matches and won two of three doubles matches. Oliver Thompson, Connor Ressler and Henrik Evanoff dominated their matches, dropping just three total games between the three of them. Kaine Bertsch at No. 4 singles battled back to win his match over Torsten Thomas in three sets, 6-7 (3), 6-0, 6-3.

Nolan Moore and Tyson Barden teamed up at No. 1 doubles, defeating Kallon DeLorme and Evan Fisher, 7-6 (4), 6-4. Minot’s other doubles victory came at No. 3 doubles with Blake Burckhard and Taven Anderson besting Brooks Bratlien and Chaz Bakken, 6-3, 6-1.

The Magicians travel to take on Bismarck Legacy on Tuesday, Sept. 23, at 4 p.m.

Boys soccer: Sentinels suffer setback in shutout loss to Williston

The Minot North boys soccer ran into a Williston club playing with plenty of momentum recently, and was unable to find the back of the net despite firing 11 shots on goal, dropping a 1-0 decision to the Coyotes on Thursday, Sept. 18.

Williston’s Ababoucarr Jobe netted the lone goal of the contest in the 18th minute off a feed from Ryan Serrano. The Sentinels (6-6-1 overall, 6-4-1 West Region) were unable to net the equalizer, as Williston goalkeeper Tristan Boots stopped all 11 shots he faced. After starting the season 0-5-0, the Coyotes are 3-1-1 in their last five matches.

Minot North backup goalkeeper Macklin Kelly made six stops on seven shots faced.

The Sentinels host Minot High on Tuesday, Sept. 23.
