College Golf: Rostad cards career-best round to open The Jewel Invitational

Minot State men’s freshman golfer Kasen Rostad shot a career-best 3-under 69 and sits tied for fifth after the opening day of The Jewel Invitational at The Jewel Golf Course in Minneapolis, Minn., on Monday, Sept. 22.

Rostad’s round featured six birdies and nine pars. At no point in his round was he over par, starting his round on the seventh hole and birdieing the ninth after opening with consecutive parts. He played the front nine at 3-under and the back nine at even-par.

The Beavers sit in eighth place as a team in the 11-team field with a score of 291. Winona State leads after the first round with a 276. Bemidji State is three strokes behind in second, followed by Minnesota Crookston (282), Concordia-St. Paul (283) and Sioux Falls (283).

There is a three-way tie for the individual lead at 5-under par. Bemidji State’s Julius Arenkiel, Minnesota Crookston’s Marc Bofarull and Concordia-St. Paul’s Trey Timm all carded 67s to lead the competition heading into the final day.

MSU’s Max Karnik and Zach Hendrickson each fired 72s and sit tied for 27th.

On the women’s side, the Beavers are 11th with a team score of 347. Abigail Goettle had the best round of the day for Minot State, finishing with an 83 and is tied for 40th.

Minnesota State leads the 12-team competition with a score of 295. Arkansas-Fort Smith – the lone non-NSIC team – is second at 298. Winona State (301), Concordia-St. Paul (303) and Wayne State (309) round out the top five.

Minnesota State’s Victoria Woytassek leads the individual competition after shooting a 1-under 70.

The Jewel Invitational concludes on Tuesday, Sept. 23.

Prep Football: Minot North remains atop Class AA rankings

Another week, another No. 1 ranking for the Minot North football team. Following a 28-7 victory over Class AAA Fargo North on Friday, the Sentinels received 16 of 18 first-place votes and are against the top team in Class AA after the release of the most recent media polls on Monday, Sept. 22.

The Sentinels have been the No. 1 ranked team since the preseason. Kindred received the other two first-place votes and sits at No. 2. The top five remained unchanged from last week, with Grand Forks Central, Devils Lake and Central Cass rounding out the top five. Grand Forks Red River was the lone team receiving consideration.

There was plenty of movement in the Class AAA poll, including a new No. 1 following West Fargo Horace’s walk-off victory at Bismarck Legacy. Fargo Shanley is the new No. 1 team, jumping up one spot following its victory over Minot High. The Deacons received 16 first-place votes in the latest poll.

Fargo Davies received the final two first-place votes and moved into the No. 2 spot. After toppling the top team, West Fargo Horace moved up two spots to No. 3, leapfrogging Legacy, which is now at No. 4. Bismarck Century is the newcomer this week, coming in at No. 5, taking Bismarck High’s spot in the rankings.

Bismarck High and West Fargo Sheyenne were also receiving votes.
